Male Hair Loss

The cause of hair loss is a controversial issue and disagreement is widespread even with the so called experts. There are many opinions on the subject and even more recommendations on how to stop hair loss or at least slow it down. There are some products which are even supposed to help regrow hair, however this is also debatable and can vary between person to person.

Adrogenetic Alopecia or so called male pattern baldness can be a man’s worse nightmare, everyone loses hair but lets face it men do it faster and more efficiently than women. Male pattern baldness is a natural process and unfortunately is a part of getting older; if you are between the ages of 18 – 45 and you start to lose hair from your scalp then the probability that you are experiencing male-pattern baldness is very high.

To the despair of most men we are genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness and this is by far the biggest cause of hair lose in men. It also affects different groups of people to different extents. Supposedly more than 50% of white men will experience some level of male pattern baldness by the age of 50, while some other races in Asia such as the Japanese are not affected as much. Scientific research has shown that the gene for hair loss comes from either or both sides of the family, and contrary to popular belief, is not linked only to your mother’s side. If your immediate family have experienced hair loss it is more than probable that you will also suffer this condition in your lifetime.

There is normally a consistent pattern in male hair loss with generally a gradual loss of hair at the temples / crown of the head and then eventually over time this leads to complete loss of hair on top of the head or in some cases all over.

DHT

Scientists believe that the male hormone testosterone or more importantly dihydrotesterone is the cause behind hair loss. DHT is produced when the enzyme 5 alpha reductase combines with testosterone. This overabundance of DHT leads to follicles that produce weaker, shorter and thinner hair and eventually over time this will cause it to stop producing hair. This DHT imbalance leads to baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

Since all of us all have DHT that is made by our bodies and only some people suffer from hair loss and others don’t there must be something else at work here. This other factor is having hair follicles that have a bigger percentage of Androgen receptors for the DHT to attach to and this is the component that is passed on through the genes of your parents. Male hormones start activating when a man is sexually mature so it is rare that a male will experience hair loss before puberty.

Stress

In my own personal view and many others, stress can be a contributing factor behind hair loss, this can also be said for other many other illness we face in our lifetimes. Stress appears to be a product of modern day life, however it did exist in the past, but it would of never of had the same kind of coverage it does today due to the media age we now live in. Today’s society especially in the west is so fast it is sometime hard to keep up and maybe thats why Caucasians suffer from hair loss more than other races. Our lifestyles seem to run at a furious and hectic pace and this even comes down to the way we eat food as more and more of us consume rubbish fast food at an alarming rate. Have any of you considered taking your full lunch time at work? I can tell you now that myself and the people I work with don’t take there full lunch breaks and most of the time you have consumed your food within 20 minutes and you are straight back to your desk staring at your PC monitor!

Of course this is just a small factor of possible stress but work stress is definitely a big player in the overall stress you face in your life, however if this leads to your hair falling out no one can be certain, but it certainly can’t help.

Among other hair loss causes there are also other factors in hair loss, these are listed below:

Injury or serious trauma

Poor diet

Environmental

Toxic substances

Medicines

Radiation (chemotherapy)

Hormonal imbalance

Possible cures

I don’t believe there is a complete cure for hair loss but there are most certainly some products out there which help slow down or prevent further hair loss, some of these products even promote that they can regrow some of your hair. These products either come in the form of a pill or just a liquid such as a shampoo and some of them are claiming big successes.

First off I recommend you get diagnosed first and to make sure your hair loss is not due to any other factor other than androgenetic alopecia. If your hair loss is a natural process than I would start looking into the many products available on the net today and do some serious research about the issue.

Of course there are easier options such as wigs or if your have the money hair replacement surgery, however I believe most people don’t want to or ever consider wearing a wig as its just to embarrassing or too much hassle or just doesn’t work. Hair replacement treatment is also a no no for most people as it’s either too expensive or they are just scared of the whole idea of taking hair from one part of your head and attaching it to another part.

So make sure, before you decide on what you want to do about your hair loss, do the research first and then decide on how you wish to combat it.

Do you know why it is more than likely that you will suffer from some kind of Hair loss or from baldness in your life time. What are the causes of this hair loss and do we have the capability to control or stop hair loss.

“Yeeee gads! My hair is falling out!” This is a cry that can affect your whole family for long, awkward moments. What is it with your hair? Is it gone forever?

Let’s clear up some confusion and try to notch down some panic about this kind of a look in the mirror.

About Hair
==========
Healthy hair simply looks good. The healthier your scalp and hair follicles, the better your hair will look. If you’re starting to experience some hair loss and a general decline in the overall health of your hair and scalp, it has probably been deteriorating for a while, and you’re only now seeing the effects.
Hair grows in a cycle of three phases. Each individual hair is in a growth phase (anagen phase) for 2-6 years, before it enters a transition phase (catagen phase) for 1-2 weeks, and then a resting phase (telogen phase) for 5-6 weeks. After that, the hair dies and falls out. Then the follicle returns to the growth phase, and a new hair begins to grow.

In normal, healthy adults, the approximate percentages of hairs in these three different phases are:

• 84% in the growth (anagen) phase
• 0-1% in the transition (catagen) phase
• 14-15% in the resting (telogen) phase

Returning your hair follicles to the anagen growth cycle is the objective of any plan to regrow healthier hair.

DHT Effects On the Hair Follicle
================================
The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. This is defined as a state where 20% or more of a person’s hairs are in the telogen (resting) phase.

In cases of alopecia, the hair growth cycle has been altered so that the anagen (growth) phase is shortened. This results in an increased percentage of hairs in the catagen and telogen phases.

The enzyme conversion of testosterone creates a compound called Di-Hydro Testosterone (DHT). The effect of DHT on the hair follicles and oil glands of the scalp can be detrimental to the anagen phase that you want to lengthen.

In areas of hair thinning or loss, the follicles have more sites to which DHT can attach, and more DHT at those sites. This buildup of DHT near the follicles can shorten their growth phase and increase the numbers of hairs in the transition and resting phases. A continuation in this buildup of DHT will actually shrink the hair follicles, which causes their hairs to become thinner, weaker, and look less healthy.

Reality Check: No product known today will grow a hair without a viable hair follicle. Only a healthy hair follicle can grow a hair.

A healthy hair follicle can resist the negative effects of DHT buildup and continue in a normal growth cycle longer than an unhealthy one can. Hair care products that seek to lessen DHT work by binding to the same sites on the hair follicle to which DHT attaches. This blocks the abnormal response of the follicle to DHT, so it blocks the harm that is causing the weakening and loss of the hair.

The nutritional supplements recommended by a naturopathic physician work by helping the body to normalize its hormone levels, while increasing the circulation of nutrients and elimination of waste products from the hair follicle. This increases the strength of the follicle and protects it from further damage.

The amounts of the conversion enzymes that create DHT from testosterone, as well as the amounts of testosterone or cortisol, are thought to be genetically determined. This is why some people tend to have less of a problem with DHT than others.

The good news is that a person’s genetic expression (i.e., how their body is now) can be changed by what that person does in the upcoming weeks, months, and years, as well as how they do it. With advances in the scientific understandings of these physical events, you can arm yourself with the right information and learn to make the changes necessary to stop a hair loss problem. We’ll next explain how.

Hair Loss
=========
A variety of health conditions and environmental factors can cause hair loss. Likewise, many different approaches can be taken to stop hair loss and even grow hair back.

Certainly, having great hair is important to us, but the body has many other important things to do on a continuous basis. Some are higher priorities than maintaining lustrous hair — things like breathing, eliminating waste, absorbing food, protecting itself from infections, fleeing from danger, and so forth. If the body has a limited budget of energy, nutrients, and strength, it starts to redirect its resources to the tasks it deems most important. This is fortunate for us.

If stressful events occur to lower that ‘budget,’ the body may find it necessary to prioritize other functions more highly than hair growth.

For example, if a person undergoes a series of radiation treatments to kill cancer, the treatments incur a major stress on the body. The body’s first priority then becomes to live and breathe to grow nice hair another day. As a result, hair loss is often the consequence of radiation treatments. Hair regrowth after this type of trauma is possible, however, depending on the state of the hair follicles and the person’s overall capacity to return to health. Naturopathic doctors call this their “vital force.”

Major Causes of Hair Loss
=========================
Hair loss might also be caused by various types of injury to the scalp, such as burns, radiation, acid spills, or scrapes. If the follicles are destroyed and replaced by smooth skin or scar tissue, a lotion or vitamin routine won’t very likely restore hair growth. At this point, it may be time for an implant, a weave, a wig, or a toupee. Or maybe it’s just time to accept the reality of a lack of hair. Bald can be beautiful, too.

Furthermore, various diseases, genetic tendencies, and auto-immune disorders can direct the body to neglect the health of the hair follicle, or even attack it directly. Some of these attacks might be triggered by environmental toxins, the side-effects of drugs, nutrient deficiencies, irregularities of hormone metabolism, or poor elimination of wastes. Here, we could discuss lifestyle choices and explanations of natural sciences such as nutrition, physiology, and biochemistry until your eyes glaze over.

If you have been taking anti-depressive medications like Zoloft or Paxil, you should be aware that the known side-effects of these types of drugs can include hair loss. The vicious cycle of compounding one’s depression by having to deal with hair loss makes these drugs a thing worth trying to avoid. Work with your doctor and be smart about your use of any medications, because many drugs have negative effects on hair growth.

If you are a “stress puppy,” and the slightest disruption in your plans tears you to pieces for hours or days at a time, your body’s response to those stress hormones can be yet another factor in hair loss and graying. Some training in stress management or anger resolution would be your best bet, while treating the resultant hair loss with physical medicines and lotions.

Sudden Hair Loss
================
Sudden hair loss can occur after severe psycho-physical stresses like illness, childbirth, menopause, losing a job, or loss of a loved one. This type of hair loss appears within a few weeks or a month of the trauma, depending on its severity. It is often reversible with time, emotional healing, and the principles of physical support described here.

Hair Loss in Women
==================
Women seldom lose their hair for reasons of genetic predisposition. They do, however, experience hair loss from the other causes we’ve already mentioned. In addition, women are more commonly the consumers of hair treatments which are known to damage the hair and cause breakage and thinning. Rough handling, harsh commercial shampoos, perms, hair color, bleach, and cosmetics all can damage the hair follicles. Hormone fluctuations through life events of men or women also contribute to stress on the physical condition of the hair follicle.

Factors to Consider
===================
What does your body need to keep your hair looking good? Factors include good nutrition, effective elimination of wastes, exercise affecting the circulation, a good attitude, use of safe non-toxic products, and sensible protections from injury. These contribute to healthy glandular functions, especially of the thyroid, adrenals, gonads, and liver. If the links in this chain of hormone functions are weak or broken, your hair will probably be the least of your problems. It might just be the most visible one in your mirror, though.

Before you spend significant amounts of money on lotions or supplements to treat hair loss, try to figure out what is causing your hair to fall out, and change what you can about that underlying situation.

Enlist the help of your doctor to figure out any internal causes. Have your hormone levels tested for thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and functions of the ovaries or testes. Make sure your nutritional intake and digestive functions are up to par. Again, this is a complex issue. It may take some study about the lotions and natural medicines available to find a plan that works for you, but the benefits to your health and appearance will be worth the effort.

People often have the mistaken notion that only males can lose hair and that alopecia is a physiological defect the gentle sex is exempt from. As a matter of fact, almost 20% of females in the world are in dire need of protection from the frightful menace of losing their beautiful hair. Most of them have never imagined that there is such a possibility in a woman’s life. First of all, there is the female pattern alopecia, which is somewhat similar to the male pattern baldness, though much less severe. Women seem now to be increasingly threatened by what is called diffuse idiopathic alopecia, the cause of which has not yet been definitely ascertained. It is an insidious disease which may not be apparent until about 80% of the hair is lost, and is then manifest as a diffuse thinning of the hair over the entire scalp.

Testosterone excretion has been shown to be elevated, and some theories have been put forward on this basis to explain this type of female alopecia. It is said that this type of alopecia is associated with seborrhea. Anyhow seborrhea should be controlled, no matter whether or not it is really the cause of the hair fall. It has also been suggested that estrogens should be taken internally. How effective this therapy is has not yet been determined. Another suggested treatment is low-dose interrupted courses of corticosteroids. It’s now not so wonderful as it once seemed to be.
In fact, the female who has lost part of her hair does not need to be a vegetarian in her diet. She should only be a vegetarian in medication.

It is noteworthy that Chinese angelica, is widely used in traditional Chinese gynecology as a medicine for curing diseases and a tonic for improving health. Its extract has the additional advantage of being able to penetrate easily through the skin and, for this reason, is employed very often as a transdermal passage promoter. In our case, the extract of Chinese angelica carries with it the extracts of the other ingredients to pass through the skin smoothly so as to reach the hair follicles that need regeneration and to pervade together with the other ingredients the environment of hair follicles inside the scalp and provide them with added nutrients. Of these other ingredients, special mention must be made of the tuber of multiflower knotweed, which is reputed to possess a wonderful power of enabling hair to regrow. It has the popular nickname of Blackhead. This nickname came from a folk story, which runs as follows:

Many years ago an old man was stranded on a desolate island as a result of shipwreck. He had to live in a cave and depend on the tuber of multiflower knotweed as his staple food for more than ten years. Fortunately, a ship sailed by and noticed his signal for help. He was saved and carried back to his native village. His fellow villagers were surprised to find that his white hair had turned black. He attributed this change to the tuber of that herb on which he had subsisted.

As no one ever made any experiment to test the truth of the story by subsisting on the tuber for ten years, what the old man related to the villagers remains a folkstory. However, the nickname that has been given to the herb shows that Chinese people believe that the herb has the ability of rehabilitating hair.

Saw palmetto has been used for ages to treat certain health conditions. Because of the expensive medications being sold in the market, a lot of people turn to the use of herbs as an alternative treatment. Not only are natural treatments cost-effective, but they are very helpful as well. Before, experts only suspected the effectiveness of saw palmetto in treating hair loss but in recent studies, saw palmetto can actually regrow hair.

Male and female can use saw palmetto to treat their hair loss problem. Science can explain better how saw palmetto works.

According to scientific studies, saw palmetto works by inhibiting the production of DHT. In short, the herb is considered as a DHT blocker or inhibitor. Testosterone produces DHT and what saw palmetto does is to prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Saw palmetto is available in oral supplements or you can use the fresh herbs and apply it directly on your scalp. It would be best to conduct a research online and find out the top quality saw palmetto supplements sold in the market. If you want to restore your beautiful healthy hair, you don’t need to think about the supplement’s cost because if you’re trying to look for cheap and discounted products, you will end up with low quality saw palmetto supplements.

Now, aside from addressing the hair loss problem, saw palmetto can also be used by men with prostate problems. It can help in reducing the prostate’s size and maintain its health. You can take care of your prostate’s health and at the same time prevent or reduce hair loss and regrow hair. Some customers even claim that saw palmetto is far better than commercial products in the regrowing of hair and reduction of hair loss.

Further studies are still being conducted to test the effectiveness of saw palmetto but even though the studies are still ongoing, a lot of manufacturers are already producing saw palmetto formulas to address the hair loss problem all over the world. If other people have tried using saw palmetto, then why don’t you?

Well of course you need to consult your doctor first. This is a pre-requisite before taking any form of medication or treatment. By doing so, the doctor can identify the cause of your hair loss and give the appropriate treatment. You must always remember that until now, no cure has been found for hair loss or alopecia. It is hard to decide which the most useful hair loss treatment is, when factors vary so much in the different produce. There is the popular vote and then there are the scientific test results, which states how much hair growth there has been or how many clients have seen benefit. In this article I will be concerned with both. The dominant thing to start with is the popularity of the different merchandise, as people wouldn’t use them if they didn’t think they were going to be good.

Propecia is perhaps the most popular treatment in the world. It is a male only treatment due to the way that it works on the male hormonal system. It would cause situations in women especially if they are carrying a baby where it can interfere with the development of the unborn baby. Propecia is a tablet that works by preventing the production of DHT from the hormone testosterone. DHT is said to cause hair follicles to shrink away and actually stop making new hair. Blocking DHT therefore should slow down the rate of hair loss. In tests it has been shown that 5 out of six men can keep the quantity of hair that they already have. Two out of three men report that they had some amount of hair regrowth. The pill seems to work best on hair loss in the front middle and top of the head. The tablets have to be consumed every day and then results should be seen within 12 weeks. If there has been no result after 12 months of treatment it is not likely that it will act on that particular person. Another thing to consider is that the gains are lost within a year if you cease taking Propecia. There are some side effects that men have stated in a small number of situations. These mainly relate to reduced sexual drive.

A lot of men and women with hair loss have tried laser hair restoration therapy. This works by stimulating the scalp with low power laser light. The laser light doesn’t burn or harm the scalp. It is without pain and has no attributed side effects. The laser is precisely just used as a stimulant for the hair follicles to generate hair. It can involve visiting a clinic on a regular basis to maintain the effectiveness of the treatment. The endless visits to the clinic can end up as a problem in itself. Once treatment ends then the gains are reversed. But now there are portable devices called laser combs which people can buy to get a similar treatment in their own time. The laser comb is a miniature version of the old hood systems used in clinics. The comb is brushed through the hair for about 10 minutes and the laser light covers the scalp in stimulating rays that increase the blood flow in the scalp and maintains the health of the hair follicles. They can be used on their own or in combination with different treatments such as Propecia. Women can use a laser comb so long as it isn’t in conjunction with other tablet type anti dihdrotestosterone products. Medical trials have claimed that 92% of users found a thickening of their hair over a 6 month usage period.

In terms of natural treatments, the treatment Revivogen is very popular. Its main materials are natural substances which block the production of DHT. In this way it acts the same as Propecia. However, because Revivogen is not taken internally, but only put onto the scalp, it can be used by women as well. There aren’t any known side effects attributed to Revivogen. As well as DHT inhibitors there are different materials included which are thought to block the receptors of male hormones in scalp cells and also to stimulate hair growth. In terms of numbers it is stated that 72% of people in consumer trials found that they either kept their thickness of hair or found some regrowth.

In deciding on the best hair loss treatment product one needs to consider all the data and then weigh up the benefits and disadvantages of each one. There are other products but these are the top 3 most used best hair loss treatment products.

Out of all the products for dealing with hair loss there are three which stand out above the rest, but each for a different reason. Popularity is one factor in the success of a product but the statistics on how successful they are have to be taken into consideration as well before you decide which one to use.
