Hair loss is a common medical problem. Millions of people all over the world are putting their efforts to stop their hair loss. How ever, most of them did not spend a couple of minutes learning what the reasons behind their hair loss are and how to handle this problem properly. Read this article to learn the basics about hair, hair loss and hair loss treatments.

One important fact to know is that an average scalp has about 150,000 hair follicles and hairs, in them more than 90% of them grow continuously. Hairs arise from these hair follicles that are present in the scalp. When these scalp pores (hair follicles) gets blocked, it leads to hair fall or growth of bad textured hairs.

Causes of Hair Loss

There may be many reasons behind hair loss. So it’s tough to list all of them here. This article will tell you only the major causes which are normally seen.

Hormonal Imbalance- One major cause of hair loss may be the hormonal imbalance brought on by something like a thyroid disease. Correcting a hormonal imbalance like the excess of androgens or estrogens could cause hair loss.

Genetic- Another big cause of hair loss is the genes being passed on from generation to generation.

Pregnancy- Many women begin to lose hairs a few months after pregnancy due to the imbalance in their hormones. This is usually cured on its own several months after the hormones return to normal.

Long Illness- Another common causes of hair loss is a long illness or a very stressful period of family strife. Stress can cause many problems with your body with one being the excessive loss of hair.

Infections- Certain types of fungal infections or degenerative diseases can also cause hair loss. To overcome the fungal infections that cause hair loss, you need to purchase an anti-fungal shampoo or lotion.

Poor diet- Lack of vitamins and minerals in your diet also leads to hair loss. You diet should contain proper nutrients to help you hairs grow healthy and keeps them strong.

Diet to Prevent and Cure Hair Loss

Protein is a vital food element required by all human beings and serves to the body in many ways. Natural sources of protein are milk, buttermilk, yogurt, soyabean, eggs, cheese, meat and fish. Normally 60 grams is required for women, between 80 to 90 grams for men and 80 to 100 grams of protein for adolescent boys and girls.

Hair problems like falling of hairs and premature graying of hairs may be caused by deficiency of some of B Vitamins, iron, copper and iodine.

A well balanced diet containing an adequate quantity of vegetable seeds, nuts green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, egg and milk should taken when a person tends to lose hair.

Prevent Hair Loss through Scalp Massage

An effective method to prevent hair fall and to promote hair growth is scalp massage. It’s easy, safe and free from side effects. Massage your scalp regularly for 5 to 10 minutes. Massage gently with the help of your finger tips. One thing should always be kept in mind that never massages your wet hairs. Allow it to dry by itself or blow it dry.

Scalp massage improves the blood circulation of the scalp thereby supporting the proper nutrition to the scalp. Secondly it helps in getting rid of dead cells and improves the hygiene of scalp and hairs. These methods in turn help in supplying nutrition to the hair follicles and leads to hair grown. Massage also helps in opening blocked scalp pores (hair follicles) and thus promoting hair growth.

Though massage is very essential to achieve hair growth but the massage should be done with the help of some nutrient and supplement that are essential for hair growth. These can be hair oils, hair creams and hair packs etc.

In doing this, it promotes their health and can reduce hair loss. It is known that Aloe Vera could also help hair growth by activating some growth enzymes in the hair follicles.

Safflower oil can be massaged into the scalp. This is another natural product that works by opening up the blood capillaries in the scalp and accordingly swelling the blood supply to the hair follicles. This provides healthy conditions for helping with hair regrowth.

Onion has been used for centuries in respect to baldness. It can be massaged into the scalp before shampooing the hair. The herb reduces any irritation in the scalp and establishes a good blood supply to the hair follicles

In terms of Aromatherapy you can apply a mixture of lavender and bay essential oils in an almond oil base. This should be massaged into the scalp. The essential oils and massage help to increase the circulation of blood in the scalp and accordingly promote the health of hair follicles.

About Propecia

Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men with established efficacy in ages between 18 to 41 years. But, hair re-growth is possible only in men with mild to moderate hair loss of the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area. However, the efficacy of Propecia has not been established in men with bitemporal recession.

Finasteride, the main ingredient in Propecia, blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT, thereby stopping hair loss and aiding in hair re-growth. Finasteride comes in tablet form and is available in strength of 1mg only for hair loss treatment. In addition, numerous side effects have been reported with this drug, including impotence, decreased libido, and breast enlargement.

Brand-name finasteride (Proscar or Propecia) is manufactured by Merck and Co., Inc.

About Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness is a universal condition found in men who experience thinning of the hair on the scalp which starts with a gradual decline in men in their 20s. Oftentimes, this thinning of hair results in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head.

It is generally believed by the doctors that male pattern baldness is by and large due to heredity and in addition, depends on hormonal effects also. This type of hair loss is generally referred to as androgenetic alopecia.

Hair is made up of hair follicles which are tiny pouch like bags found just under the surface of the skin. A single hair will stay in the follicle for about 3 years which is then shed and a new hair grows from the same follicle. This cycle of growth, shedding and new growth goes on throughout one’s life. The following pattern thought to occur in men as they gradually become bald which includes:

• Affected hair follicles on the scalp gradually become smaller than normal
• As the follicle shrinks, each new hair is thinner than the previous one
• Before falling out, each new hair grows for much less time than the normal 3 years or so
• Eventually, all that remains is a much smaller hair follicle and a thin stump of hair that does not grow out to the skin surface

Male hormones are responsible for these changes. Hair follicles convert testosterone, the male hormone, into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone. For reasons not yet unveiled, affected hair follicles become more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone, which causes the hair follicles to shrink. However, it is known that different hair follicles are affected at different times which make the balding process gradual.

Moreover, it is also not clear why only scalp hair is affected, and not the hair in the other areas like the beard or the armpits in men. But, male pattern baldness occurs gradually over time. Similarly, Propecia also has a gradual effect on hair re-growth.

Propecia for Men Hair Loss treatment

For most men, Propecia aids in increasing the number of scalp hair in the first year of treatment itself. Propecia helps to fill in the thin or balding areas of the scalp. In addition, hair loss slows down. Although, the results may vary, generally it is not possible to re-grow all of the lost hair. However, there is no proof as to Propecia working in the treatment of receding hairline in the temporal area on both sides of the head.

Propecia must be taken daily for three months or more before any benefit can be seen. Known to work over the long term, Propecia is an ongoing treatment for hair re-growth. However, if Propecia has not worked for you in twelve months, further treatment is not likely to bring any benefit. In addition, if Propecia intake is stopped, there will be a likely loss in the hair that was gained within 12 months of stopping treatment.

How does Propecia work?

Finasteride, the main ingredient in Propecia, is a competitive and specific inhibitor of Type II 5a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into DHT. Two distinct isozymes found in humans, Type I and II, are differentially expressed in tissues at different developmental stages. In humans, Type I 5a-reductase is predominant in the sebaceous glands including the scalp and liver and is responsible for approximately one-third of circulating DHT. Meanwhile, Type II 5a-reductase isozyme is primarily found in the prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides, hair follicles and the liver and is responsible for two-thirds of the circulating DHT.

In humans, finateride’s mechanism of action is primarily based on its preferential inhibition of the Type II isozyme. For both isozymes, finasteride inhibits and reduces the inhibitor to dihydrofinasteride. The turnover for the enzyme complex is slow and therefore the hair re-growth is slow.

Finasteride has no similarity with the androgen receptor and has no androgenic, antiandrogenic, estrogenic, antiestrogenic, or progestational effects. Propecia produces a rapid reduction in serum DHT concentration and has the ability to reach about 65% suppression within 24 hours of taking the 1mg oral dose.

In men with androgenetic alopecia, the balding scalp contains miniaturized hair follicles and increased amounts of DHT as compared to a hairy scalp. Use of Propecia successfully reduces scalp and serum DHT concentrations in these men. By this mechanism, finasteride interrupts a key factor in the progress of androgenetic alopecia in those patients who are genetically predisposed.

Who should buy Propecia?

Propecia has been introduced for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men and should not be taken by women or children. Propecia can be taken by:

• Men only above the age of 18 years
• Anyone who is not allergic to any of the ingredients of Propecia

Women who are or may potentially be pregnant should not use Propecia or handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets. Because, if a pregnant woman with a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in Propecia, either by swallowing or through the skin, it may cause abnormalities to foetus’ genital organs.

Propecia dosages

Propecia 1mg tablet is meant for oral administration and is the recommended daily dosage. These tablets are film-coated and contain 1mg of finasteride. it may be administered with or without meals.

In general, three months of regular use of Propecia is required before any benefit can be observed. Continuous use is recommended to sustain gained benefits. Withdrawal of treatment will lead to reversal of effect within 12 months.

Coated Propecia tablets help prevent contact with the active ingredient finasteride during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed.

Propecia (finasteride) is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound and a specific inhibitor of steroid Type II 5a-reductase which is an intracellular enzyme that converts androgen testosterone into 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

It is not for nothing that hair has often been called a woman’s ‘crowning glory’. A vital physical attribute, hair is such an asset that it can make a plain woman look stunningly attractive. No wonder than that most women are highly alarmed at the mere thought of them being suffering hair loss.

The most common reason for hair loss in women is ‘androgenetic alopecia’. It leads to immediately noticeable thinning of hair, especially at the top and side areas of the scalp. Female alopecia or female-patterned baldness is a condition that makes an estimated one-third of women vulnerable to hair loss. Though some alarmingly unfortunate instances have been noted to take place at puberty stage, this type of hair loss usually occurs when women are in their postmenopausal stages.

Another hair loss condition in females is – ‘anagen effluvium’, wherein hair strands may not have yet reached the final stage of their life cycle. However, with the use of certain agents, like medications that are administered internally, still-growing hair follicles can be poisoned and eventually finished.

Conversely, ‘telogen effluvium’is a condition of female hair loss wherein there are more hair strands reaching the telogen stage than what their number should usually be.
A number of factors may be held responsible for ‘telogen effluvium’, namely:

Stress

Though stress is considered to be a psychological factor, it can often be caused by an unnatural physical condition like having just undergone surgery and experiencing the changes it created on your body. Crash dieting, anemia, and various kinds of illnesses can also result in undue stress.

Excessive loss of hair could well be a result of emotional and psychological factors inducing stress. The problem can be aggravated at the time of grief over the death of a loved one or a mental illness.

Medications

A person can temporarily suffer hair loss as a result of a number of medications and treatments. People on medications in the case of high blood pressure, or gout can certainly show symptoms of hair loss. Extra care should also be taken with medications containing great quantities of Vitamin A, as these can also induce hair loss.

Hormones

During the course of menopause, or while experiencing pre-menopausal or postmenopausal symptoms, women become exposed to the condition of hair loss, as are women who are using birth control pills or are pregnant. This is primarily due to the hormonal changes or abnormalities their bodies are being subjected to.

Once the underlying cause of ‘telogen effluvium’ is found out and effectively treated, the hair will gradually begin to return to its normal condition.

It is not correct to assume that frequency of shampooing hair can cause hair loss, even though harsh or strong chemicals in shampoo products are sometimes blamed for hair loss. At times, some of your hair strands may come to be loosened up with shampoos and cause you to shed more than usual, but affected hair strands may be those already in the ‘telogen’ stage and would have fallen out in any case. However alarming this temporary condition may be, your body mechanism will automatically replace the lost hair!

Propecia finasteride is one of the most prescribed treatments for male pattern baldness which is one of the most common causes of male hair loss. Developed by Merck pharmaceuticals, Propecia was approved by the US FDA in 1997 as a prescription only treatment for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

About Propecia finasteride and how does it work?

Propecia finasteride is found to be effective in 90% of men who have tried the treatment. The drug not only helps to prevent further hair loss but also stimulates the growth of new hair. To achieve the most effective results, Propecia treatment should be started in the early stages of male pattern hair loss.

The active ingredient in Propecia is called finasteride. The compound belongs to a class of medicines called type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Propecia finasteride inhibits the natural conversion process of male sex hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Although DHT is an important sex hormone, in some men the level of DHT becomes quite high. When in excess, DHT shrinks the hair follicles in the scalp, eventually leading to the hair falling out. Propecia helps to lower the level of DHT in the body and thereby helps to prevent further hair loss.

Positive effects of Propecia

Propecia finasteride helps to normalise the level of DHT and help it stay low enough so the adverse effects of DHT on the hair follicle stop. By working this way, Propecia helps to normalise the hair growth cycle and in turn reverse the hair loss process. The results of the Propecia treatment are noticeable within 3 months of starting the treatment. In 5 years time, men may notice a head full of hair depending on what stage they started the treatment and how well their body adapts to the treatment. The effects of Propecia have been studied in a 5-year clinical study in which 90% of the patients reported a visible improvement.

Who can take it?

• Propecia is meant to be used in men suffering from male pattern baldness after consulting a doctor
• Only men can take Propecia, it is not recommended for women and children
• Men who have a known allergy to finasteride or any of the other active ingredients contained in the drug should not take Propecia

Side effects of Propecia

Like any other prescription drugs, Propecia too comes with certain side effects. However, Propecia’s side effects are very rare and do not affect most men. A small percentage of men report sexual side effects such as low libido, difficulty in achieving an erection or a decrease in semen volume. These side effects go away when men stop taking Propecia. In rare cases men have reported serious side effects including changes in their breasts such as lumps, pains or nipple discharge as well as testicular pain. If you experience any bothersome Propecia side effects, you should report to your doctor immediately.

Choosing Propecia over other hair loss treatments and how can you buy it?

Propecia is proven more effective, more convenient and more affordable than any other hair loss treatments currently available on the market including hair transplants, wigs, topical application treatments such as minoxidil or any other alternate treatments.

Though Propecia is available on consultation basis only, you can now buy it from the convenience of your home from online Propecia clinics. These websites allow you to consult a doctor online, free of cost and get your medicine delivered to your doorstep.

Propecia is one of the most prescribed treatments for male pattern baldness today. The medicine not only helps to prevent further hair loss but also stimulates the growth of new hair. Learn how Propecia works, its benefits, side effects and how can you buy it online below.

“Yeeee gads! My hair is falling out!” This is a cry that can affect your whole family for long, awkward moments. What is it with your hair? Is it gone forever?

Let’s clear up some confusion and try to notch down some panic about this kind of a look in the mirror.

About Hair
==========
Healthy hair simply looks good. The healthier your scalp and hair follicles, the better your hair will look. If you’re starting to experience some hair loss and a general decline in the overall health of your hair and scalp, it has probably been deteriorating for a while, and you’re only now seeing the effects.
Hair grows in a cycle of three phases. Each individual hair is in a growth phase (anagen phase) for 2-6 years, before it enters a transition phase (catagen phase) for 1-2 weeks, and then a resting phase (telogen phase) for 5-6 weeks. After that, the hair dies and falls out. Then the follicle returns to the growth phase, and a new hair begins to grow.

In normal, healthy adults, the approximate percentages of hairs in these three different phases are:

• 84% in the growth (anagen) phase
• 0-1% in the transition (catagen) phase
• 14-15% in the resting (telogen) phase

Returning your hair follicles to the anagen growth cycle is the objective of any plan to regrow healthier hair.

DHT Effects On the Hair Follicle
================================
The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. This is defined as a state where 20% or more of a person’s hairs are in the telogen (resting) phase.

In cases of alopecia, the hair growth cycle has been altered so that the anagen (growth) phase is shortened. This results in an increased percentage of hairs in the catagen and telogen phases.

The enzyme conversion of testosterone creates a compound called Di-Hydro Testosterone (DHT). The effect of DHT on the hair follicles and oil glands of the scalp can be detrimental to the anagen phase that you want to lengthen.

In areas of hair thinning or loss, the follicles have more sites to which DHT can attach, and more DHT at those sites. This buildup of DHT near the follicles can shorten their growth phase and increase the numbers of hairs in the transition and resting phases. A continuation in this buildup of DHT will actually shrink the hair follicles, which causes their hairs to become thinner, weaker, and look less healthy.

Reality Check: No product known today will grow a hair without a viable hair follicle. Only a healthy hair follicle can grow a hair.

A healthy hair follicle can resist the negative effects of DHT buildup and continue in a normal growth cycle longer than an unhealthy one can. Hair care products that seek to lessen DHT work by binding to the same sites on the hair follicle to which DHT attaches. This blocks the abnormal response of the follicle to DHT, so it blocks the harm that is causing the weakening and loss of the hair.

The nutritional supplements recommended by a naturopathic physician work by helping the body to normalize its hormone levels, while increasing the circulation of nutrients and elimination of waste products from the hair follicle. This increases the strength of the follicle and protects it from further damage.

The amounts of the conversion enzymes that create DHT from testosterone, as well as the amounts of testosterone or cortisol, are thought to be genetically determined. This is why some people tend to have less of a problem with DHT than others.

The good news is that a person’s genetic expression (i.e., how their body is now) can be changed by what that person does in the upcoming weeks, months, and years, as well as how they do it. With advances in the scientific understandings of these physical events, you can arm yourself with the right information and learn to make the changes necessary to stop a hair loss problem. We’ll next explain how.

Hair Loss
=========
A variety of health conditions and environmental factors can cause hair loss. Likewise, many different approaches can be taken to stop hair loss and even grow hair back.

Certainly, having great hair is important to us, but the body has many other important things to do on a continuous basis. Some are higher priorities than maintaining lustrous hair — things like breathing, eliminating waste, absorbing food, protecting itself from infections, fleeing from danger, and so forth. If the body has a limited budget of energy, nutrients, and strength, it starts to redirect its resources to the tasks it deems most important. This is fortunate for us.

If stressful events occur to lower that ‘budget,’ the body may find it necessary to prioritize other functions more highly than hair growth.

For example, if a person undergoes a series of radiation treatments to kill cancer, the treatments incur a major stress on the body. The body’s first priority then becomes to live and breathe to grow nice hair another day. As a result, hair loss is often the consequence of radiation treatments. Hair regrowth after this type of trauma is possible, however, depending on the state of the hair follicles and the person’s overall capacity to return to health. Naturopathic doctors call this their “vital force.”

Major Causes of Hair Loss
=========================
Hair loss might also be caused by various types of injury to the scalp, such as burns, radiation, acid spills, or scrapes. If the follicles are destroyed and replaced by smooth skin or scar tissue, a lotion or vitamin routine won’t very likely restore hair growth. At this point, it may be time for an implant, a weave, a wig, or a toupee. Or maybe it’s just time to accept the reality of a lack of hair. Bald can be beautiful, too.

Furthermore, various diseases, genetic tendencies, and auto-immune disorders can direct the body to neglect the health of the hair follicle, or even attack it directly. Some of these attacks might be triggered by environmental toxins, the side-effects of drugs, nutrient deficiencies, irregularities of hormone metabolism, or poor elimination of wastes. Here, we could discuss lifestyle choices and explanations of natural sciences such as nutrition, physiology, and biochemistry until your eyes glaze over.

If you have been taking anti-depressive medications like Zoloft or Paxil, you should be aware that the known side-effects of these types of drugs can include hair loss. The vicious cycle of compounding one’s depression by having to deal with hair loss makes these drugs a thing worth trying to avoid. Work with your doctor and be smart about your use of any medications, because many drugs have negative effects on hair growth.

If you are a “stress puppy,” and the slightest disruption in your plans tears you to pieces for hours or days at a time, your body’s response to those stress hormones can be yet another factor in hair loss and graying. Some training in stress management or anger resolution would be your best bet, while treating the resultant hair loss with physical medicines and lotions.

Sudden Hair Loss
================
Sudden hair loss can occur after severe psycho-physical stresses like illness, childbirth, menopause, losing a job, or loss of a loved one. This type of hair loss appears within a few weeks or a month of the trauma, depending on its severity. It is often reversible with time, emotional healing, and the principles of physical support described here.

Hair Loss in Women
==================
Women seldom lose their hair for reasons of genetic predisposition. They do, however, experience hair loss from the other causes we’ve already mentioned. In addition, women are more commonly the consumers of hair treatments which are known to damage the hair and cause breakage and thinning. Rough handling, harsh commercial shampoos, perms, hair color, bleach, and cosmetics all can damage the hair follicles. Hormone fluctuations through life events of men or women also contribute to stress on the physical condition of the hair follicle.

Factors to Consider
===================
What does your body need to keep your hair looking good? Factors include good nutrition, effective elimination of wastes, exercise affecting the circulation, a good attitude, use of safe non-toxic products, and sensible protections from injury. These contribute to healthy glandular functions, especially of the thyroid, adrenals, gonads, and liver. If the links in this chain of hormone functions are weak or broken, your hair will probably be the least of your problems. It might just be the most visible one in your mirror, though.

Before you spend significant amounts of money on lotions or supplements to treat hair loss, try to figure out what is causing your hair to fall out, and change what you can about that underlying situation.

Enlist the help of your doctor to figure out any internal causes. Have your hormone levels tested for thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and functions of the ovaries or testes. Make sure your nutritional intake and digestive functions are up to par. Again, this is a complex issue. It may take some study about the lotions and natural medicines available to find a plan that works for you, but the benefits to your health and appearance will be worth the effort.

There are many causes of hair loss. Both men and women can obtain it. It can be because of nutritional deficiency, hormone imbalance, stress, and diseases. But generally the most common cause of it is called adrogenetic alopecia. It is the medical term for hair loss or baldness. Just the presence of someone in your family of balding is not enough to predict that you will also become bald. It is really hard to predict who will go bald and how fast will it be. That is why planning for hair restoration will be very important for those people who gets alarmed about it. Normal men and women produce androgenic hormones. Dihydrotestosterone, androsteinedione, testosterone (DHT) is the most common. For men testicles and adrenals are the one to produce it.

For women ovaries and adrenal glands are the one to produce.These hormones are important for both sexes. But have different concentrations, and this is more predominant for males than females. This in part, differentiates the genders. Exposure of hair follicles to DHT, in a susceptible person, in a period of time leads to male and female pattern to baldness or the so-called adrogenetic alopecia. There is no exact age for balding occurrence. Balding is a process, simple yet this fact is often ignored. This process can be slow or rapid. It usually starts at late teens. Illnesses and medical conditions is one of the causes of hair loss. For example, thyroid disease and diabetes, can cause hair loss. Those people with liver and kidney diseases and lupus can also have baldness. Adult women and teen girls can have hair loss due to hormone imbalance in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Medications such as acne medicines cause hair loss. Amphetamines in diet pills can also cause hair loss. And the very known medication that causes hair loss is chemotherapy. Alopecia areata is a skin disease than causes hair loss on the scalp and sometimes on the body. It is an autoimmune disease. The own immune system is the one to damage the hair follicles. Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder in which a person pulls his/her own hair that can also lead to hair loss.

Hair treatments and styling the hair gives tension to scalp and hair becomes damaged and leads to hair loss. Nutrition is also one factor of baldness because of lack of protein, vitamins and minerals that sustains the hair. Disruption of hair cycle growth is also a problem. Like delivering a baby, getting anesthesia, or having surgery.

Hair Loss in Men

Hair loss and thinning hair have been sensitive issues for men throughout time. Recently, medical science has finally identified the main cause of hair loss. Now, it is a known medical fact that hair loss stems from both genetic and hormonal causes. Androgenetic Alopecia or “male pattern hair loss” is implicated in 95% of hair loss cases. The key is a hormonal byproduct called DHT (dihydrotestostrone). The more DHT that gets put into your body, the more your hair follicles become thinner and finer until the hair is permanently lost.

DHT – The hormones responsible for hair loss

DHT is one of many male hormones in the body. DHT is developmentally important early in a man’s life; however, it appears to be a cause of hair loss as men get older. Male pattern hair loss is caused by a hormone called as dihydrotestostrone (DHT). It is produced from the hormone testosterone with the help of an enzyme- 5-alpha reductase. DHT, once formed, binds to the hair follicles, retarding their growth and cutting off their blood supply. The hair starts to thin down and eventually falls. Thus, the more levels of DHT in the body, more the hair follicles shrink causing male pattern baldness.

The effect of DHT on the hair cycle

Hair in our scalp are regularly grown and replaced by constant hair cycling of activity and rest. A typical hair undergoes three phases- the growth phase-anagen lasts for two to six years producing well pigmented-thick hair. At any given time, 90% of the scalp hairs are in the growth phase. The second phase, catagen is a transient phase lasting for few weeks. The hair starts becoming thinner and the follicle starts shrinking. The last phase, telogen is for two to four months, where the thinned hair falls off making way for new hair. DHT has been shown to shorten the growth phase causing untimely hair loss. It also causes shrinkage of hair follicles so that regrowth may not occur.
